Despite the ban by the traffic police, the oil filling stations in Jammu are still giving fuel to two-wheeler riders not wearing crash helmets.
In an important initiative taken by the traffic police of Jammu and Kashmir in collaboration with petrol pump dealers associations, it was mutually decided that no filling station will give fuel to the two-wheeler rider if the rider is not wearing a crash helmet.
But after spending thousands of rupees on banners, the traffic police as well as the petrol pump dealers forgot their “rule” and now providing fuel to everyone without noticing their crash helmets.
Anan Sharma, President Petrol Pump Dealers Association, J&K, said, “We are trying to implement the rule, but we need the support of the enforcement agencies as we cannot argue with all the customers and sometime people become violent when we refuse to give them petrol.”
“We have requested the traffic police to deploy their staff so that we can deny the traffic rule violator fuel and they can also fine the violator,” he added.
Sharma said the district administration should also issue an order to deny petrol to the traffic rules violators so that the rules could be implemented strictly.
The Traffic Department also accepted that the rules were not being implemented properly.
“We are trying to implement it properly. We are also working out on deploying policemen at petrol pumps,” said Mohan Lal, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Traffic Jammu.
“The decision was taken with mutual understanding of the traffic police and petrol pump dealers associations and if required we can also request the Deputy Commissioner to issue an official order to implement it,” he added.
